Also they protect RCC structure from collapsing during seismic activity like earthquake.

What are uses of stirrup? 

Uses of stirrups:– 1 legged and 2 legged stirrups used in lower dimension of column and beam and 3 legged, 4 legged, 5 legged, 6 legged and 7 legged stirrups used in higher dimension of column and beam.

Legged stirrups:- legged stirrup consists of 1 legged (open stirrups), 2 legged (closed) & multi-legged (closed) stirrups. Multi- legged stirrup are 4 legged, 5 legged, 6 legged, 7 legged and 8 legged stirrups.
What is meaning of L in stirrup

L is stand for legged ,1 legged, 2 legged and 3 legged stirrups are used when width of column and beam is less than respective depth and when width of column and beam is greater than depth of then we provide 4 legged stirrups and more legged —

What is  1L (legged) stirrup?

1 legged stirrups:- It is single legged stirrups generally provided in T shaped beam, the single legged stirrups have rarely have been used because they are mostly used when binding only two rods.

What is 2L(legged) stirrup?

2 legged stirrups:- It consist of 2 legged, it is 2 legged stirrup generally provide in lower dimension of beam and column having width is less than respective depth, the common and widely used stirrup is 2 legged stirrups to provide this stirrup minimum number of rod is required.

What is  multi L(legged) stirrup

Multi-legged stirrups:- more than 2 legged are known as multi-legged stirrups. For example 3 legged, 4 legged, 5 legged,6 legged and 7 legged stirrups provide in higher dimension of beam and column having wide width.

4 legged stirrups:- It is made of 4 legged, the cross sectional area of 4 legged stirrups is twice of cross sectional area of 2 legged stirrups and hence it can resist greater stress and shear force. If we increase legged in stirrups there is a increase of strength and bear more stress and also requirement of reinforcement is increased.

4 legged stirrups require more quantity of reinforcement and therefore a resist more shear stress and force and they also provide more stability to the top and bottom reinforcement when pouring of concrete.
